Matthew Flinders
On March 16 1774 a young boy by the name of Matthew Flinders was born. This small child was destined to become a great explorer one day and do great things. This young fellow was going to do Australia great things one day.
Matthew Flinders was the son of Matthew Flinders a surgeon and Sussannah, née Ward. They lived in Linconshire with his four brothers and four sisters. Matthew Flinders was educated at Donington Grammar school. When Matthew was young he read a book called Robison Crusoe. This particular book made him long to go on many expeditions and voyages.
Later, in 1789, Matthew Flinders joined the Navy. In 1791 he served with diligence under William Bligh as midshipman on a voyage to Tahiti and, returning to England. Matthew Flinders was also lucky enough to see the battle called the Glorious First in 1794. The ship which he was in was called H.M.S Bellerphon. he was with the renowned sailor captain Cook. For captain Cook he had to keep notes anytime that he possibly could for the battle. He soon became well known for this story. In February, Matthew Flinders was selected to be a commander for the boat H.M.S investigator. The next year he sailed from England to Port Jackson in H.M.S Reliance in which George Bass, a great friend of Matthew Flinders, was surgeon.
